Today I heard about a municipality that was hiring dozens of firefighters. There were hundreds of applicants, and each one needed to bring a birth certificate, a certified diploma, and a money order. I have no problem with a birth certificate and a diploma, but a money order? I can see why cash and credit cards are bad ideas… cash can get stolen, and credit cards require machines and cost a few percent to process. But why wouldn’t a personal check be OK? If someone wrote a rubber check, there is plenty of recourse – you could refuse to give them a job, which is the sole reason they are there in the first place. These are people that want to run into burning buildings on a stormy night at 3 AM in order to save other people’s lives, or even just a liquor store, all for a modest base salary. The really good ones are being disrespected at the very first interaction. The posers will be weeded out during the physical, intellectual and personality tests, or during their early years on the job.
It is a hurdle that serves no purpose.
